Sentara Martha Jefferson has a long, proud history of providing compassionate, safe health care to our community, and it has always been our privilege to care for the people who turn to us for help. It’s also our responsibility, however, to ensure we offer the latest evidence-based, technologically advanced care—our community expects no less. But there’s another side of our Caring Tradition that may not be as obvious, and that’s the responsibility we feel as a community hospital to support and empower you to take care of your healthbeforeyou need to see us.
Our health is a precious gift—something each of us needs to take care to maintain and preserve—and part of our mission is to remind the community that prevention really is the best medicine. We’re here to help you avoid injuries and disease, and to encourage you to seek preventive care and treatment before problems become too serious. That’s why we offer resources like our classes and support groups—for example, our “Ins and Outs of Pre-diabetes” class and our “Heart to Heart” support group (see pages 25-26), outreach opportunities in the community like our annual Wine, Women and Wellness event held at the Paramount, as well as educational efforts through social media channels andSentara Martha Jefferson Magazine.
Of course, the main responsibility of a hospital is to take care of those who are sick and injured. That sense of responsibility, along with our commitment to being the best we can be, is what inspires our team at Sentara Martha Jefferson to continue seeking ways to improve all levels of care. For instance, we’ve recently enhanced processes in our emergency departments, both at the hospital and at our freestanding location at Proffit Road, to help provide emergency care in a more timely and efficient manner.
Additionally, in January we opened our new Sentara Sports Medicine Center, where our fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians now offer the latest treatments for athletes and active people of all levels. This new facility is just one component in an entire continuum of orthopedic care that we offer. Our team also continues to make a dramatic impact in the lives of stroke patients, locally and across the region, through our leading-edge neurointerventional program. These are just a few of the more recent examples of how our Caring Tradition informs everything we do at Sentara Martha Jefferson.
With spring just around the corner, and the warmer weather and longer days ahead, I invite you to visit Sentara Martha Jefferson’s health campus. Come walk on our trails and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us as nature reawakens from its winter sleep. Come enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with friends at Greenberry’s or stop by our cafe for a healthy lunch. And be sure to check out our community events this year, both downtown and here on our campus.
We’re here for you … however you may need us. Thank you for entrusting Sentara Martha Jefferson with your healthcare needs.
