The Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation:

Facilitating Community Connections

Throughout the 15-year history of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation, its primary goal has been to secure philanthropic resources to support programs and services at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. During that period, our community’s generosity has been extraordinary, helping to fund such causes as the construction of our new hospital, palliative care and support for nursing through the Haden Institute. Impressively, through those three initiatives alone, more than $65 million has been raised from donors, helping to connect and bind community members with the hospital’s mission of providing safe, compassionate, high-quality care.

While making a philanthropic gift may be somewhat financial and transactional in nature, there is also an equally important human connection involved in the process. Often, individuals making a gift are fulfilling an emotional connection they or a loved one has with the hospital. They also may be expressing gratitude, appreciation or relief for the care they or a loved one has received. That kind of expression has been shown to be an important piece in the overall healing process, and perhaps in a family’s grieving process as well. Through its efforts, the Foundation helps to facilitate these connections between donors and those they wish to honor.

Since not all gifts are financial, the Foundation often also helps to strengthen the community’s connection with the hospital through volunteerism. While not an operational component of the Foundation, the more than 500 volunteers who give their time to Sentara Martha Jefferson are supported in the work they do through philanthropic funds designated to advance the hospital’s Caring Tradition and the enhancement of the patient/family experience. The Foundation’s 22-member board and 300-plus-member Women’s Committee also provide direct connections between Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital and our community.

Moving forward, we will be adding a new way of looking at connections the Foundation can facilitate through Sentara Martha Jefferson’s 1,500 employees. Whether it’s engaging in board service, civic organization membership, coaching, mentoring or church activities, our team members invest countless hours each year into our community to help make it a better place. In 2018, the Foundation looks forward to growing the impact of those connections and supporting our staff in their endeavors.

As always, thank you for your generosity, support and sense of connection with Sentara Martha Jefferson.
