Sentara in the Community

Sentara Martha Jefferson and Sentara RMH look forward to various opportunities throughout the year to engage with the communities they serve through public events, classes, health screenings and other means. In addition to providing helpful health and wellness information, these events are also a way to connect with the community on a more fun and interpersonal level.

“As a community hospital, it’s important for us to take care of patients in need, but we also want to have a presence in our community outside the hospital walls,” says Jonathan Davis, president of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. “To meet our mission of improving health every day, we need to care for people on many levels. Being able to provide health education, as well as community events that are fun and relaxing, is important to our team, and something we plan to continue in the future.”

“Sentara RMH has been an integral part of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham area for more than a century, and we’re proud to have the confidence and support of our community,” says Doug Moyer, president of Sentara RMH Medical Center. “It’s important for the hospital to be a visible presence in the communities we serve—not just when people need us for health care, but also when the community comes together in celebration, during events like the Rockingham County Fair or Harrisonburg’s annual International Festival.”

The following are just a few highlights from the past year in Charlottesville and Harrisonburg.

Women, Wine and Wellness: Ladies’ Night with Sentara Heart!

This free community event, held in April at the Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, was open to anyone with an interest in learning more about important cardiac issues that impact women. Those attending enjoyed an opening social hour with wine, chocolate and light refreshments, followed by brief presentations from two Charlottesville-based cardiologists, a health and wellness expert, and a nutrition expert from Sentara Martha Jefferson. The evening closed with a question-and-answer session. More than 200 people attended the event, and plans are in the works for another. Thanks to Whole Foods and Gearharts Fine Chocolates for generously providing wine and chocolate!

Aging Gracefully

Each May, the Sentara RMH Senior Advantage Program sponsors Aging Gracefully, a half-day conference promoting healthy aging as a way of life. Senior Advantage is a social and educational group for anyone “55 or better” who wishes to take a proactive stance toward healthy aging. Members receive a quarterly newsletter and have access to health screenings, seminars and social events. The Aging Gracefully conference provides health and wellness seminars; blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings; and light refreshments, along with entertainment. About 125 people attend the annual event, which is held at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene on Boyers Road. To learn more about Senior Advantage, call 540-564-7001 or visit Sentara.com.

Sunsets with Sentara

This July, Sentara Martha Jefferson hosted Sunsets with Sentara, a free event open to the community and hospital staff. The outdoor concert event allowed people to mingle and relax on the hospital lawn while enjoying the sunset and listening to live music by progressive bluegrass band Mama Tried. Food and beverages were available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Cancer Center at Sentara Martha Jefferson. An estimated 700 people attended the event, which was a great way for hospital staff to connect with friends and neighbors from the Charlottesville community.

Sentara RMH Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Team Up with Local Schools

If you look closely, you’ll probably see Sentara RMH physicians and physician assistants at local high school football games on Friday nights this fall. They’ll be on the sidelines during home games of East Rockingham, Broadway, Spotswood, Turner Ashby and Harrisonburg high schools to support student athletes and the schools’ certified athletic trainers. Providers will assess and treat players for conditions such as concussion symptoms, sprains, fractures, ACL tears and more. Additional services provided include 24/7 on-call availability to the schools’ athletic trainers for consults on injured athletes, follow-up care for athletes in clinic and free annual sports physical screenings for high school athletes. In addition to high school sports, Sentara RMH orthopedic physicians provide coverage for the Bridgewater College football team, the soccer team at Eastern Mennonite University, and all of James Madison University’s club and intramural sports. They also provide on-site care at the training rooms or student health centers for Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University and James Madison University.

Sentara at Fridays after Five

Sentara Martha Jefferson was a regular presence this spring and summer at Fridays After Five, the popular concert event at the Sprint Pavilion in downtown Charlottesville that draws hundreds of community members and visitors each week. Sentara Martha Jefferson had a variety of specialties represented throughout the season, including orthopedics, family medicine and imaging, among others. Hospital staff were available each week to answer questions, hand out goodies and provide general awareness to people in the community about the services offered locally by Sentara. The concerts were a great way to engage with community members who may need healthcare services in the future.

Sentara Goes to the Rockingham County Fair

Thousands of attendees at the Rockingham County Fair visited the Sentara RMH Medical Center display booth during the week of Aug. 14-18. Hospital staff members were on hand each evening to greet visitors and offer items such as tote bags, Sentara footballs and travel-size first-aid kits. The hospital also gave away 8,000 bottles of water and—thanks to the generosity of the RMH Foundation—provided free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, cholesterol and glucose screenings, and diabetic foot ulcer screenings. On Wednesday evening, the local health department joined us to provide free immunizations for rising sixth-graders. We also had on display a set of our new copper linens, which are now used in all Sentara hospitals to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections. The linens were of great interest to many who came by our booth.
