Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation and the Charlottesville community lost a dear friend with the passing of Leslie Gilliam in December 2016. Leslie embraced the Caring Tradition of Sentara Martha Jefferson and had a strong vision for the important role our community hospital plays in the lives of our citizens. Leslie and her husband, Richard, served as vice chairs of our historic capital campaign for the new Martha Jefferson Hospital and put their generous personal philanthropy behind that effort. Leslie also served on The Women’s Committee, and Richard on the hospital’s Board of Directors.
The Gilliams have been loyal supporters of Sentara Martha Jefferson for many years, designating gifts toward initiatives such as digital mammography and palliative care, and became close personal friends with Jim Haden, former Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital president, and his wife, Sue.
Leslie once wrote in this magazine about her pride in her “Pollyanna hopes” for Martha Jefferson’s future in the new hospital and with our new partner, Sentara, and encouraged others to share that mindset. In another article she stated: “I hope that I will be remembered as someone who heard the cries of people who needed a hand up, and that my actions resulted in opportunities for them. I enjoy working in our community, and I have received much more than I have given.”
Leslie’s family, friends and community will miss her.
