Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation Annual Report

The Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation helps create a culture of philanthropy, engagement and support, to meet the priority needs and initiatives of Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. As we enter our 17th year, the Foundation, with community support, has helped raise more than $82 million to advance patient care, launch programs, support our caregivers and construct the replacement hospital that opened in 2011.

New philanthropic priorities were identified in 2017, building upon the success of the Haden Nursing Institute—with more than $11 million in gifts and commitments and $3.5 million in designated endowment support—as well as 11 years of support for our outstanding Palliative Care Program. These “legacy” philanthropic priorities continue to inspire meaningful gifts that support healthcare consistent with our Caring Tradition.

As an extension of our nationally accredited Comprehensive Breast Care Center, through early support we have implemented ourHigh-Risk Breast Clinic. An estimated 1,000 women are identified each year at Sentara Martha Jefferson as being at high risk for developing breast cancer, based upon genetics and family history—factors over which they have no control. Through the more than 30,000 mammography exams performed at the hospital each year, we are able to identify and support these women through their care process and decisions.

Our Cancer Survivorship Programalso has been launched with visionary gifts to meet the challenges of our growing population of cancer patients living with what has become, for them, a chronic disease state with a new set of needs and challenges following the extensive treatment phase.

The High-Risk Breast Clinic and Cancer Survivorship programs share aNurse Practitioner, whose position is philanthropically supported, as well as some initial and trial support services (see the article on Whistle Words on page 32.) We are still seeking funds to sustain both of these programs over a three-year pilot period, add more care resources and develop an endowment for long-term sustainability.

The Family Caregiver Support Programwill help caregivers by offering emotional support, help in navigating the hospital and healthcare system, and referrals to community resources. It will also provide group opportunities to learn and share, consultation with care professionals such as chaplains and social workers, and respite opportunities to recharge. This program is in the developmental stages and requires funding for implementation staffing as well.

In support of our most important asset—our staff—and to continue to advance clinical excellence in patient care, we began 2018 by implementing theCenter for Clinical Educationto support non-nursing professional clinical staff.

Two aspects of this program have garnered early support. First is a scholarship program to engage community members and hospital support staff into entry-level clinical positions that also represent the beginning of a pathway for job growth and enhancement. Those who join us at this level will have education and social support in partnership with Piedmont Virginia Community College’s Network2Work program. Second, we have launched a hospital-wide scholarship program, mirroring the Haden Nursing Institute, to advance the education and careers of our non-nursing clinical staff. As with our other new initiatives, endowment will help to ensure long-term sustainability.

One area often overlooked is our ongoing reliance on the Caring Tradition Fund. Through every corner of the hospital, the Sentara Martha Jefferson Caring Tradition is supported through small grants and funding applications from the Caring Tradition Fund,as implemented by the hospital’s Patient Family Advisory Committee. This is also where support derives for the hospital’s awesome volunteer program. In addition, the Fund supports our Acts of Kindness program, which enables staff members to obtain small items from the gift shop to help make a patient’s day or hospital stay more manageable. We work across the hospital to identify needs that can—even in very small ways—reinforce our Caring Tradition every day.

Your generous support makes all the difference. Gifts from our community remain here to support our community and strengthen our Caring Tradition, and for that we deeply and sincerely thank you.
