Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation: A Community of Philanthropy

The 2019 Martha Jefferson Champion’s Cup was held May 13, 2019, at Glenmore Country Club. Event proceeds supported the Caregiver Center, a new program funded by the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation to help family caregivers cope by offering emotional support, assistance navigating the hospital and healthcare system, and referrals to community resources.

Community members are invited to relax on our lawn with their families while enjoying the sunset, live music, and refreshments from local food trucks, breweries and wineries. Last November, The Women’s Committee (TWC) of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation celebrated its 26th year by going back to where it all started—the Boar’s Head Inn!

Taking on a bold challenge, TWC Board members worked tirelessly to make the 2019 Martha’s Market, which took place at the Pavilion at the Boar’s Head, a memorable shopping experience. Moving the event to mid-November also enabled organizers to create a special and festive holiday shopping experience for our patrons.

The event featured a smaller, more intimate venue; a more select group of high-quality local and regional vendors; and a few successful changes, such as the Sip n’ Shop shopping experience on Friday night and the Celebration of Hope Gala on Saturday night. Also on display was our Gallery of Hope—a collection of portraits of women who have battled breast cancer and were treated at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. Each portrait shared the story of a survivor’s individual journey with cancer.

Attendance and sales at the event were fantastic, the volunteers and vendors were thrilled, and we remain committed to tweaking this experience further to achieve the right balance for all. Vendors contribute 15 percent of every sale to benefit the fundraiser.

Over the years, Martha’s Market has provided funds for a wide range of programs and services benefiting women’s health care, including critical services to underinsured or uninsured women in our community through free biannual breast health screening days.

Established in 1993 with a group of 16 women, TWC membership has grown to more than 260 members today. The committee continues to make a meaningful impact on programs at Sentara Martha Jefferson through its three annual fundraisers: Martha’s Market, the In the Pink Tennis Tournament and the Squash Cancer Tournament. Nearly $6 million has been raised through the success of these events to date, made possible through corporate and individual sponsorships, as well as the detailed planning and diligent efforts of the passionate volunteers who serve TWC.

“In addition to the 17th year of In the Pink and the seventh year of Squash Cancer, 2019 was another hugely successful year for TWC,” says Amy Nolasco, TWC chair. “Our committee is so proud to continue to host these events, which fund many programs and services at Sentara Martha Jefferson. We are grateful for the amazing support we receive from our community—especially our sponsors, shoppers, and the many tennis and squash participants who help ensure the success of our events!”

Each October, the Student Council Association at Wetsel Middle School in Madison County works to raise money in support of breast cancer awareness, research and treatment. For the last four years, the group has donated those funds to Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.

At the end of the month, Wetsel students and staff held a “Turn Wetsel Pink Day” to celebrate their hard work and present Sentara Martha Jefferson with their donation.

We are so grateful for Wetsel Middle School and the efforts of their passionate and dedicated students, which help us improve health in our community every day!

The Women’s Committee welcomes new volunteers and encourages those interested to contact the committee’s membership chair at or visit for more information.
