As we head into the holiday season, there are many things for which I am grateful. When I take a moment to reflect on the work of our team and how we all contribute to our mission to improve health, day in and day out, it’s simple for me to find many blessings.
First, over the past year we have launched several new clinical services, giving us the opportunity to provide more care to our patients and better serve the community. As you will read in our cover story, we have a new helipad at the hospital that allows us, better than ever before, to care for critically ill patients from across Central Virginia. The helipad also allows us to collaborate with our sister hospital, Sentara RMH, and help meet the needs of stroke patients from that community. Additionally, this past year we opened our Back and Neck Care Clinic on Route 29, enabling our team of doctors to provide consistent, seamless management of back and neck pain in one location—a huge benefit for patients. Sentara Martha Jefferson also now offers genetic counseling and genetic testing services, an important resource that provides patients with the most advanced information about their health.
In addition to growth in our clinical services, we’ve expanded and improved access over the past year by bringing new physicians to our team. While each was drawn to Sentara Martha Jefferson for a different reason, it is clear there is something special about our community hospital. You can hear from Dr. Andrew Romano, one of our newest medical oncologists, about why he chose to practice at Sentara Martha Jefferson.
As we have continued expanding our services, we have also seen incredible success in terms of awards and accolades. And while positive praise is always appreciated, what pleases me most is the hard work of so many of our team members, behind the scenes, to make everything we do possible. A prime example of all that hard work can be seen in the achievements of our nursing staff. In July, Sentara Martha Jefferson received Magnet® redesignation for the third time, emphasizing the high degree of nursing excellence we offer. We are the only hospital in our region to have achieved this designation for 12 consecutive years, which speaks volumes about the quality of nurses who care for our patients.
On Sept. 9, our Phillips Family Cancer Center was surveyed by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The surveyor was very complimentary of our cancer program. And while official results are yet to be announced, we were told the program was deserving of the highest commendation. These results, along with many others, reflect the dedication of each and every member of our team to providing extraordinary, safe care.
Lastly, I am grateful for the support and loyalty each of you provides to the Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital family. We feel honored to compassionately serve you and your families, whether comforting and leaning on one another in times of need or as we bring new life into our community. I know that when it comes to health care, our community members have choices, and I am so thankful that you put your confidence and trust in Sentara Martha Jefferson.
