Gifts Made in Honor or Memory of a Loved One Make a Lasting Impression

There are times when a special friend, beloved family member or compassionate caregiver inspires in us a desire to acknowledge and pay tribute to that individual and relationship in a distinctive and meaningful manner. The following details three ways to make such a meaningful expression in honor or memory of a friend, family member or caregiver.

Commemorative Tree Plantings at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital

When Sentara Martha Jefferson set out to design the new hospital on Pantops Mountain, planners created a set of guiding principles to ensure that the facility would fit into the landscape and foster a healing experience for patients and their families—both inside and outside the physical walls of the building. Matching the spirit of the Caring Tradition delivered inside each day to the hospital’s surroundings was a key priority.

A special commemorative opportunity is available for donors wishing to make a gift in the amount of $1,000 in honor or memory of an individual. The Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation has established a Commemorative Tree Fund, to which individuals may direct their gift, for the planting of a special tree (chosen from three identified species) to be located in the area designated for these plantings in the master campus landscaping plan. The first phase of the grove will include 40 trees to be added along the path that joins the amphitheater (upper campus) with the lower campus, creating a contiguous grove of strikingly colored blossoms and foliage.

At the conclusion of the grove’s development, a plaque will be placed near the entrance to the grove with the names of donors and those honored. At the time of planting, a garden marker also will be installed at the base of each tree, identifying the common name of the tree species and the name of the individual for whom and by whom the tree is commemorated. These gifts will be listed annually in Sentara Martha Jefferson Magazine’s tribute listing.

Your Gratitude is More Powerful Than You Think

Often a patient or family member, grateful for the care provided at Sentara Martha Jefferson, has a desire to do something tangible to give thanks and acknowledge the difference a special caregiver or team of caregivers have made during an especially vulnerable time. One such meaningful expression is a charitable gift made in honor or memory of a special friend or family member that can be directed to support hospital programs or services that were significant in the life of that individual. Your caregiver will receive an acknowledgement letter announcing that a gift has been made in his or her honor for the care you or your loved one received.

Your gift can help ensure that others will receive the same high-quality care in the future. Gifts of Gratitude to Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital help support vital programs and services that benefit patients, families and caregivers alike. And by sharing your story, you can sprout seeds of gratitude, kindness, compassion and caring in others.

Seeds of Gratitude brochures can be found in hospital waiting areas. Or, to make your gift of gratitude online, visit www.mjhfoundation.org/seedsofgratitude.

Baby Wall Provides Wonderful Opportunity to Celebrate Birth

The birth of a baby is a wondrous event, and the Baby Wall at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is a great way for proud parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends to welcome new arrivals by having the baby’s name and birthdate inscribed on one of the wall’s many turtles. Located in the third-floor waiting area, adjacent to the Mother-Baby Unit, the Baby Wall contains turtles in three species: loggerhead, green and leatherback.

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital is honored to celebrate the joy of new life with you and to be part of this precious moment. The Baby Wall also may serve as a remembrance for those who wish to honor the life of a baby.

Baby Wall recognition gifts will support the Newborn Nursery and Mother-Baby Unit, helping to ensure the health and well-being of the mothers and babies we serve.

For more information about how to add a baby’s name to a turtle, please contact the Foundation Office at 434-654-8258.

Recognition Opportunities:

Green                  $500
