Could Your Diet Soda Be Causing You to Gain Weight?

Even though your diet soda may contain few (if any) calories, it could still be contributing to weight gain, according to researchers at Purdue University. In some people, the sweet taste of diet soda seems to “trick” the body into expecting a rush of glucose (blood sugar). When the expected glucose isn’t forthcoming, these people may begin to experience sugar cravings that can then cause them to indulge in sweet, calorie-rich products, leading to weight gain.

Although the research is inconclusive at this point, many nutritionists recommend drinking diet soda in moderation, if at all. The healthiest beverage choice is water, but you can also drink fresh juice (with no added sugar), or coffee and tea without sugar or other artificial sweeteners. In addition to its possible effects on weight gain, diet soda—like all products made with artificial sweeteners—contains chemicals that may not be good for your health.
